The Kokin Wakashu, an anthology of Japanese poems from the 10th century, contains a verse regarding the plovers inhabiting Shionoyama, the location of the source spring for the hot springs baths of Enzan Onsenkyo, which made the location popular among court poets of the time. Enzan Onsenkyo has been in operation for around 600 years, with seven ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns, situated close by
